Purpose: There is an increasing number of doctoral dissertations of nursing science at Ewha Womans University for the last 27 years. The purpose of this study was to analyze the doctoral dissertations, focused on nursing program development and intervention studies, in order to uncover strengths and weaknesses, and to make useful suggestions for future studies.
Methods: A total of 38 doctoral dissertations from 1983 to 2011 were qualitatively analyzed in terms of types and numbers of subjects, types of nursing programs, subject recruitment methods, and the existence of theoretical backgrounds, reliability and validity reports.
Results: Although recent doctoral dissertations made attempts to develop diverse nursing programs for various populations with respect to gender and age, most studies were limited to adults and senior citizens. Little theoretical background and rationale for nursing programs was addressed. In terms of methodology, there was a lack of human subject protection, reliability and validity reports.
Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, future studies are expected to develop nursing programs, based on solid theoretical backgrounds, for more diverse populations, and employ more rigorous methodology. Furthermore, future studies should be conducted based on firm and concrete research ethics and developed human subject protection system.
